How to check iPhone battery health

Effective battery management is crucial for maintaining your iPhone’s speed and reliability. As batteries chemically age, their ability to hold a charge diminishes, which can lead to performance "throttling" or unexpected shutdowns.

Why Battery Health Matters

When an iPhone battery degrades, iOS may automatically reduce performance (throttling) to prevent the device from pulling more power than the battery can provide. Symptoms of a degraded battery include:

  • App Lag: Applications taking longer to launch.

  • Stuttering: Lower frame rates while scrolling or gaming.

  • System Freezes: Occasional hanging or unresponsive touch controls.

Note: While older models (iPhone 6/7 series) feel these effects significantly, newer models (iPhone 8 and later) use more advanced hardware and software designs to make throttling less noticeable.

How to Check Your Battery Health

To access these insights, your device must be an iPhone manufactured after 2014 and running iOS 11.3 or later.

1. Verify Your Software

Go to Settings > General > Software Update to ensure you are on the latest version of iOS.

2. View Battery Stats

Navigate to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On this screen, you will find two key metrics:

Maximum Capacity - A measure of battery capacity relative to when it was new. New phones show 100%.

Peak Performance Capability - Indicates if your battery is supporting normal peak performance or if performance management (throttling) has been applied.
